In fact, I have been told many times that I am a local legend in the industry. This is because for at least 10 years I held the number one position on Google for “Dallas SEO” and “SEO Dallas” and no one could knock me down, no matter how hard they tried. And I dare say no one took the title from me either, I just let it go from lack of time, attention, and ambition. I stopped caring about it.

Make it as easy as possible for users to go from general content to the more specific content they want on your site. Add navigation pages when it makes sense and effectively work these into your internal link structure. Make sure all of the pages on your site are reachable through links, and that they don’t require an internal “search” functionality to be found. Link to related pages, where appropriate, to allow users to discover similar content.

When your business has an idea about a new search topic for which you think your content has the potential to rank highly, the ability to spin up a query and investigate it right away is key. Even more importantly, the tool should give you enough data points, guidance, and recommendations to confirm whether or not that particular keyword, or a related keyword or search phrase, is an SEO battle worth fighting (and, if so, how to win). Hence, one way to dominate SEO in 2017 is to increase your experiments and observe the results. One example is trying a more aggressive link profile in the wake of the more forgiving Penguin. The Microsoft SEO Toolkit combines quite a few different tools into one. Used together, it can analyze your site and provide recommendations on how to make your site’s content more SEO-friendly, including tweaks to your sitemap and robots.txt. Sorry to all of the Apple folks, this one seems to be Windows-only!
Regarding the amount of comprehensive data provided, this is the best resource. A massive amount of information returns with each search, but filtering through it is overwhelming if you don’t know how to use it. However, it is beyond compare if tracking your competitors is a vital part of your business.
Free is awesome. Especially when that “free” whatever is giving you extra traffic, money, rank, reputation, riches, etc. Thankfully, there are a ton of free tools in the SEO world. The downside is that some of these free tools are junk.

Glad I’m not alone with my love/hate relationship with the Google Keyword Planner. It’s definitely an awesome tool and SEOs couldn’t live without. But as you said, it’s really not designed to help you find completely new keywords.

It allows you to see a bird’s eye view of how your site is performing in search engines and look at what your competitors are doing for both organic and AdWords.

To track your website performance and bugs, Google’s Search Console is your best option, while to understand traffic changes, landing page performance and other SEO elements, Google Analytics a vital role.
